Commissioned in december 1941 yamato was designed to counter the numerical superiority of the u.S. Navy by relying on overwhelming firepower. Armed with nine 18.1-Inch guns the largest caliber ever mounted on a warship it was a floating fortress capable of devastating enemy vessels at extreme range.
