Baseline tactile monofilaments are medical-grade instruments used to test for loss of sensation in the hands or feet subcutaneous sensory perception threshold . These fine-tipped nylon instruments are pressed against the skin to check for loss of sensation due to nerve damage caused by arthritis carpal tunnel syndrome diabetes neuropathy injury and more. Impaired sensation can lead to balance problems and injury. Results are then used to create a treatment plan of care. Use different-sized monofilaments to apply unique pressure to the skin to see if the individual responds to the force applied. If the individual responds then sensation is present. If not then move on to the next-largest monofilament to accurately access the degree of sensitivity loss. Monofilaments are available in 20 sizes which are determined by both size and force. Size is measured in grams and force is calculated by the pressure applied when the monofilament presses against the skin.
