Originally designed in response to a british request for a new fighter the mustang first flew in 1940. Early models were equipped with the allison v-1710 engine which limited their performance at high altitude. However once fitted with the rolls-royce merlin engine the p-51 became a dominant force in the skies. The p-51d introduced in 1944 was the most produced variant featuring a bubble canopy for improved visibility six .50 Caliber m2 browning machine guns and enhanced fuel capacity allowing it to escort bombers deep into enemy territory.The p-51d saw extensive combat in world war ii particularly in the european theater where it provided crucial bomber escort during daylight raids over germany.
