History aspects:the boulton paul defiant mk.I introduced in 1937 was a unique british interceptor aircraft designed during the early years of world war ii. Distinctive for its turret-mounted four .303 Browning machine guns the defiant mk.I was conceived as a turret fighter intended to engage enemy bombers with a 360-degree firing range. Initially the aircraft showed promise particularly during the dunkirk evacuation in may 1940 where its unconventional design allowed it to achieve significant success against luftwaffe bombers.However the defiant mk.Is fortunes changed dramatically during the battle of britain. German fighter pilots quickly adapted their tactics attacking the aircraft from below where its defensive turret offered no protection. This tactical vulnerability combined with the defiants relatively slow speed and lack of forward-firing guns led to heavy losses.
